About The Open University (OU)
The Open University (OU) is the largest academic institution in the UK and a world leader in flexible distance learning. Since it began in 1969, the OU has taught more than 2.3 million students and has around 208,000 current students.
The OU is rated in the top ten of UK universities for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey, since the survey began in 2005. In 2021/22 it had a 86% satisfaction rating. Over 70% of students are in full-time or part-time employment, and four out of five FTSE 100 companies have sponsored staff to take OU courses.
In the latest assessment exercise for university research (Research Excellence Framework), nearly three quarters (82%) of The Open University’s research was assessed as 4 or 3 star – the highest ratings available – and awarded to research that is world-leading or internationally excellent. The Open University is unique among UK universities having both an access mission and demonstrating research excellence.
The OU has a 42 year partnership with the BBC and has moved from late-night lectures in the 1970s to co-producing prime-time series such as Life Story, Bang Goes the Theory, Britain’s Great War, I Bought a Rainforest and Business Boomers. Regarded as Britain’s major e-learning institution, the OU is a world leader in developing technology to increase access to education on a global scale. Its vast ‘open content portfolio’ includes over 800 free courses on OpenLearn, which receives 4.5 million visitors a year, and materials on YouTube, Bibblio, AudioBoom and iTunes U, which has recorded over 69 million downloads.

About institutional approval and programme validation
OU accreditation and validation are stamps of quality that guarantee the value of your award. OU validated awards are equivalent in level and standard to similar awards offered throughout UK higher education. An OU validated award is exactly the same as an OU direct award and offers the same opportunities in terms of employment or application for further studies.

Non-Validated Programmes
All Nations also offers programmes which are not validated by the Open University. They carry our own name which is well respected among cross-cultural mission organisations and workers around the world. These include the ANCC Certificate and ANCC Diploma. You can find out more about the differences between the ANCC and OU programmes on the relevant course pages Certificate, Diploma. We also offer our shorter En Route programme and a range of short courses.
